The IUFRO Working Group on Landscape Ecology was established in 1991 to promote and facilitate the application of landscape ecology concepts in practical management activities wherever forests exit in the world; to encourage communication and interaction among scientists with an interest in landscape ecology and forestry; to provide a forum for:
Facilitating the exchange of ideas of a holistic vision of forests
  • Creating and maintaining personal contacts
  • Promoting the dissemination of research results
  • Encouraging cooperation with international organizations (e.g., IALE, FAO, IUCN, UNESCO, ESP)
  • Summoning periodic meetings
  • Recognizing outstanding scientific and practical contributions
  • Supporting the teaching of landscape ecology in institutions of higher learning

This working group has organized biannual meetings since 1993 presenting and debating actual issues in forest landscape ecology across the globe. The 2010 meeting took place in Bragança, Portugal, attracting more than 300 participants from all over the world.
